    Hall of Distinction Business Excellence Awards 2002

    Five outstanding Newmarket companies were honoured Wednesday evening by the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. Their achievements were recognized at the 13th annual Newmarket Chamber of Commerce Hall of Distinction Business Excellence Awards. The awards were presented at a dinner and ceremony in the Great Hall at Pickering College. Nominations for the awards are open to the community. Any firm or individual doing business in Newmarket is eligible. A distinguished panel of Chamber members, plus the General Manager perform the judging.Guest speaker at the dinner was Michael Garrett, CAO of the Regional Municipality of York.Appointed in May, Mr. Garrett lead the amalgamation of seven municipalities into the new City of Toronto. He has been CAO of Peel Region and has held a number of other leadership posts in government.He told the more than 150 Newmarket business people gathered at the sold-out dinner that "York Region's future is bright" but warned the quality of that future depends on us.He said we will need continual vigilance to ensure we protect our natural heritage and the high level of safety in our communities. On the economic side, he said, York is booming. We had $1.5 billion in construction last year, and job growth is away up. York can looked ahead to a population of 1.3 million people by 2026 - 500,000 more than now, and there will be three times as many residents over the age of 50.

    The Bell Technology Award
    Awarded to a Newmarket business that has demonstrated innovation in the use of technology in the ever-changing communications area. A nominee must have been an active Newmarket business for 12 months or more, have utilized an innovative and creative approach to integrate leading-edge communication technology (including the use of the internet) to their business; and use of the communication technology must have a significant impact on the company's business plan.
